Mackie’s famous claim that Locke ‘anticipates’ Kripke’s Causal Theory of Reference (CTR) rests, I suggest, upon a pair of important misunderstandings. Contra Mackie, as well as the more recent accounts of Paul Guyer and Michael Ayers, Lockean Real Essences consist of those features of an entity from which all of its experienceable properties can be logically deduced; thus a substantival Real Essence consists of features of a Real Constitution plus logically necessary objective connections between them and features of some particular Nominal Essence. Furthermore, what Locke actually anticipates is the most significant contemporary challenge to the CTR: the qua-problem.

THE UNCHANGEABLE ESSENCE BUT CHANGEABLE AND UNCHANGEABLE ATTRIBUTES
In what follows, the author has dealt with the relation between the necessary being as an unchangeable Essence and His changeable and unchangeable attributes. Neither is the ascription of any changeable attribute impossible for God nor is the ascription of any kind of unchangeable attribute possible. As the change of genitive attributes does not demand the change in the Essence, it is possible...
متن کاملReference, Truth, and Biological Kinds
This paper examines causal theories of reference with respect to how plausible an account they give of non-physical natural kind terms such as ‘gene’ as well as of the truth of the associated theoretical claims. I first show that reference fixism for ‘gene’ fails. By this, I mean the claim that the reference of ‘gene’ was stable over longer historical periods, for example, since the classical p...
متن کاملDefending a Dual Theory of Natural Kind Concepts
In this thesis I argue that the psychological study of concepts and categorisation, and the philosophical study of reference are deeply intertwined. I propose that semantic intuitions are a variety of categorisation judgements, determined by concepts, and that because of this, concepts determine reference. I defend a dual theory of natural kind concepts, according to which natural kind concepts...
متن کاملSelection of suitable reference genes for real-time PCR studies of early developmental stages of sturgeons
In quantitative real-time PCR, the mRNA level can be quantified in relative terms based on the expression ratio of mRNAs of the target gene and an internal reference gene. Since, an internal standard should be expressed at a constant level among different tissues of an organism at all stages of development, and should be unaffected by the experimental treatment, the stability of different refer...

There are some expressions and terms in the speeches of mystics which represent their world-view and recognition i.e. a kind of recognition which is a personal experience of every mystic. Because of asceticism and purification of his carnal soul, he is inspired and favored by God, and receives a spiritual state that cannot be put into words. Inevitably, he uses a symbolic language in order to c...
